Note from the producer
About a century ago, the western culture came in force to the kingdom of Siam. The overwhelming influx brought about a great change in, among other things, the way the Thai people made music. Fascinated by the new language of the sound, the Thai musicians embraced the occidental musical forms and turned from being essentially at the service of the courtly affairs to finding for themselves a new stage among the populous music lovers. Novelty became the vogue of the time and music took the lead in the way of the modern and fashionable Siamese.
Today the same phenomenon still holds, and so true and strong it seems that the Thai music may soon lose its identity altogether. Yet, a closer look shall reveal that the quality in question is very much there especially in the domain of the melody, that which carries the heart of the musical expression. For better or worse, Thai music has gone through drastic transformations and much debate. Influence or no influence, it appears that we have, at the end of the day, a new kind of music that renders itself nicely to the ear of a wider audience, including those from foreign soils.
In those earlier days, Bangkok had less concrete structures to show and was much richer in its cultural offering. In reviving fond memories of the old days of our city of angels, this album presents old Thai tunes from both the classical and popular repertoires, along with newly written ones that touch upon the timeless charms of the city which, despite her huge and ungainly changes, have never failed to fascinate those who have come to know her.Dnu Huntrakul

"Nostalgically lucid...
Fizzling and colorful,
alternating with dainty and classical...
funky and witty,

Fresh and sassy rhythm..."
